Historic Kandy faces risk of sinking: Neranjan

- BY L.B. SENARATNE

Historic Kandy may sink at any moment with the stress that it has been subjected to at road level, due to the neglect of the one hundred and thirty five year old sewerage system built by the British in developing Kandy, said the Leader of the Opposition Neranjan Wijeyaratne, at the Kandy Municipal Council meeting.

He said the brick and lime sewerage system which was with large drains underneath the city of Kandy had been built by the British during their administration, which had been good for the era. But today, unauthorised inlets have been made, especially by business houses in the City into these large drains. This has affected the walls of the drains and they are on the verge of collapse. Some, have already collapsed, the Leader of the Opposition Neranjan Wijeratne said. In the next few years the entire city would collapse, since the system has been interlinked, throughout the city.

ways and means of sustaining the system and avoid a major catastrophe, with the entire city sinking in one day.

Though there had been a resolution in the Council over ten years ago to have a flying squad to act on complaints of unauthorised structures, yet these misdeeds have gone unchecked.

However, according to the Leader of the Opposition and also one-time Diyawdana Nilame, Neranjan Wijeyartne one day when the whole City is asleep it would just fall into an abyss.

The statement made by the Oppositon Leader has partially come true with the caving in of an area near the Kandy Electricity Power station and the Railway line where one could see the water underneath.
