Film actress sued to recover Rs one million
The petitioner contended that the defendant, Marapone, had failed to fulfill the requirements of the scholarship
The case brought against performance artist Duleeka Marapone to recover rupees one million that had been given to her as a grant to go to UK to follow a course in performance arts was taken up in the Colombo District Court yesterday (18).
The petition was filed by the President’s Fund against the popular teledrama and film actress to recover rupees one million that was awarded to her by the fund as a scholarship to follow a course in performance arts at the College of North West London. The petitioner contended that the defendant, Marapone, had failed to fulfill the requirements of the scholarship. The petitioner asserted that the grant was awarded by the fund to performance artists and musicians as a scholarship to follow the course in the UK. The petitioner further claimed that in 2005 the grant was awarded to Marapone to undergo training in performance arts but that she had failed to complete the course as agreed and not met the terms in the bond signed by her.
The fund on several occasions had requested Ms. Marapone to return the one million rupees it had given to her and since the defendant had failed to act upon the agreement a course of action had to be taken to file a case against her to recover the amount.
