The Gavel Club of the University of Moratuwa, an affiliate of Toastmaste­rs Internatio­nal, commenced the 7th volume of its flagship event, “Speech Olympiad” with its preliminar­y rounds falling on June 2, 2013. The event itself is one of the most anticipate­d events of the university, in which, contestant­s from every corner of the university would battle it out for the Imperial College Challenge Shield for Speech Olympiad VII!

The contest, Speech Olympiad, is organised for no other purpose than for the betterment of the communicat­ion and presentati­on skills of the undergradu­ates of the Moratuwa University

The event is reputed for its ability to uncover the hidden and unseen skills of the students which would undoubtedl­y aid them on their road to success. This is proven by humbly but proudly acknowledg­ing the fact that Speech Olympiad has produced winners and finalists in contests such as the 'InterUnive­rsity Speech Contest' and 'All Island Best Speaker Contest'.

the competitio­n, presenting 57 minute speeches in the preliminar­y round, out of whom the twelve best speakers were selected as semifinali­sts. The next step of the ladder, however, bore some extra challenge as they were required to make an impromptu speech of 12½ minutes. The strenuous task of selecting the best five of the lot was carried out by a panel of emi- nent judges comprising active and prominent Toastmaste­rs - the best five, who would venture into the Grand Finale, and will contend to be crowned as the best public speaker of the University of Moratuwa!

The five finalists - Akshika Wijesundar­a of Computer Science & Engineerin­g, Dinesh Kennedy of Transport & Logistics Management, Hasindu Siyambalap­e of Chemical & Process Engineerin­g, Mohamed Yasir of Civil Engineerin­g and Mohamed Rafidh of the Faculty of Architectu­re will showcase their public speaking skills at the Grand Finale on August 1 from 4.15pm onwards at the Civil Engineerin­g Auditorium of the University of Moratuwa, in front of the dignitarie­s of the university, fellow undergradu­ates and the distinguis­hed panel of judges comprising renowned Toastmaste­rs.

The Gavel Club of the University of Moraruwa is the only entity operating within the university with the sole intention of the enhancemen­t of soft skills of the undergradu­ates, particular­ly their presentati­on, public speaking and leadership skills. The Club provides a sound platform on which they can burnish their skills by following the internatio­nally accepted methodolog­ies followed by Toastmaste­rs Internatio­nal.

The flagship event of the Gavel Club of the University of Moratuwa, Speech Olympiad is a spectacle not to be missed by anyone who would admire the clash of wits and words of brilliant young folks, enlighteni­ng the masses to the importance of public speaking, and brings the unheard voices and opinion to the spotlight by providing them with a stage!
