3rd Arugam Bay Surf Classic 2013 gets underway
The third Arugam Bay Surf Classic organized by Arugam Bay Beachwear in association with the local Arugam Bay Surf Club got underway with over 35 local surfers in action at the world famous main point Arugam Bay beach yesterday.
The bulk of the competitors involved were from down South town of Hikkaduwa, Unawa- tuna, Unakura, Rathgama and Tangalle and surfers from villagers around Arugam Bay.
The specialty of the Arugam Bay Surf Classic was the father and son combination from Australia the former world surf champion Wayne Deane and Jimi Deane officiating at the proceedings as two judges

The bulk of the competitors involved were from down South towns of Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Unakura, Rathgama and Tangalle and surfers from villagers around Arugam Bay.
This in fact is the only national surfing competition which gives an opportunity for up and coming and experienced surfers to showcase their talent if they are seeking to make strides in the future.
The opening day’s proceedings saw the heats being conducted with some of the top surfers being successful in advancing to the second round which is scheduled to be held from morning from 8.00 a.m. onwards.
The specialty of the Arugam Bay Surf Classic was the father and son combination from Australia the former world surf champion Wayne Deane and Jimi Deane officiating at the proceedings as two judges. Wayne was the world champion in 1990 when it was held in Japan.
Ajai Singh who is spear- heading the organizing committee speaking to the ‘Daily Mirror’ said that there was immense interest shown in the sport of surf around the island.
“The sport is being held with great enthusiasm around the world and it is nice to see that happening in Sri Lanka. What we want is to support those who are taking an interest and encourage them. We intend conducting events of this nature in the southern region” he added.
The Arugam Bay Beachwear is the main sponsor of the Arugam Bay Surf Classic 2013 with co sponsors being Land Rover, Cargills Kist, Standard Chartered Bank, Onda and Wine World.
Wijeya Newspapers Ltd (Daily Mirror, The Sunday Times, Lankadeepa) being the media sponsors. The meet will be continued today and the final is scheduled to be held on July 27 (Saturday).
