Raging weather sweeps through Colombo
CMC donates flood relief
The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) yesterday donated asbestos sheets for houses damaged due to the heavy rains and strong winds in Kirullapona earlier this week.
The CMC said, close to a hundred houses were damaged due to the weather conditions in Kirullapone, Dematagoda and several areas in Colombo. The CMC also said they were in the process of clearing up roads that were affected.
Thunder showers and strong winds which swept across the country earlier this week, damaged many houses and flooded Colombo and several suburban areas.
The CMC spokesperson said the roofs of most of the houses were damaged.
According to the CMC compensation was to be provided under two phases and would be given in the form of asbestos sheets or money.
“Some people have requested for money allowances and some wanted us to provide the sheets instead of money. The donations will be given accordingly,” he said.
The first phase was allocated to the people in the Kirullapona which was most affected by the South Western monsoon.
Under the second phase, which will operate next week, the CMC said they would be paying compensation to other families in other areas under their purview.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said, after the initial reports, not much damages were reported due to heavy rains.
Speaking to Daily Mirror, Media Spokesman of the Disaster Management Centre Lal Sarath Kumara said there was partial damages to houses in Thimbirigasyaya and Maharagama areas and not many massive destructions had been reported.
“Around one hundred and thirty two houses were reported to be partially damaged and there were damages to vehicles as well,” he said.
The Media Spokesman said certain roads such as Kirullapona, Reid Avenue, Borella and Poorwarama were blocked.
“The block only existed for around two to three hours. But we managed to clear the roads,” he said.
Lal Sarath Kumara stated that although it rained heavily there were not any massive destructions reported.
