The minister gave this assurance at a ceremony held at the Thennakumb­ura Junior School where several of its students were severely injured recently when a bus on an educationa­l tour had skidded off the road and plunged into a ditch at Seetha Eliya in Nuwara Eliya

this Government was well aware of the plight of the students in the bus tragedy and about those who were injured when the Museum staircase collapsed.

He said taking a cue from these unfortunat­e incidents, dis.cussions were held with all insurance companies in implementi­ng a special insurance scheme for the welfare of students countrywid­e.

“This scheme has the blessings of the President as well,” he said. The minister distribute­d school books, bags and school uniforms valued at Rs.400,000 donated by the Sisudiriya Sathkara Foundation.

Uva Provincial Council Minister Kumarasiri Ratnayake was also present.
