- BY REKA THARANGANI AND KUSAL CHAMATH

The situation at Prince of Wales College in Moratuwa reached a critical stage yesterday (26) when over 2000 parents including the Moratuwa Mayor Samanlal Fernando prevented the new principal J.W.S. Siriwardene from assuming duties at the school.

A senior police official said that the new principal had briefed the police about the situation and that police security would have been provided if he had made such a request.

Meanwhile parents carrying placards who had gathered in their numbers at the school grounds despite heavy rain

demanded that the authorities can- cel the appointment of the new principal and reinstate the former principal, Sampath Weragoda. When questioned by the media why he participated in the protest, the Moratuwa Mayor Samanlal Fernando said that although he was the city father he gave leadership to the protest as the father of a student of the school and not in his capacity as the mayor.
