Some still living in the past
The article published by S L Gunasekera says that CHOGM is a wasteful expenditure and that it is a colossal blunder to host the Conference because Sri Lanka is a small country, etc, etc.
Some individuals live in the past, and cannot comprehend that Sri Lanka is progressing economically, and is no longer the under-developed and poor country that it was. But, it must be understood that Sri Lanka is today a proud nation, moving forward with promise and is being recognized by many nations and analysts as a progressive “break-out” nation. In that background, hosting events like CHOGM, Commonwealth Games, international tournaments, major conferences, etc. is necessary for Sri Lanka to confidently take its rightful place in the international arena.
The current conditions in the country also indicate that Central Bank Governor Nivard Cabraal has steered the Sri Lankan economy from being a poor, under-developed, war-torn and subservient economy to an internationally credible, middle income nation in just seven years. I think Cabraal’s record is one that cannot be matched by anyone of S L Gunasekera’s generation or attitude, and that is perhaps why Gunasekera seems to be harbouring an inner resentment against the man whose bold, innovative ideas and actions have fashioned the recent outstanding economic success of Sri Lanka.
