Navodya teacher given police protection
Security is being provided to the Navodya Maha Vidyalaya teacher Susila Herath, who was forced to kneel in the presence of former provincial councillor Ananda Sarath Kumara, the Nawagaththegama police said.
Mr. Kumara was remanded by the Puttalam Acting Magistrate on charges that he had made the teacher kneel in his presence and the presence of the teaching staff and students on June 14
They said it was done on a directive by the Anamaduwa Court after a complaint was made to the police that the teacher and her husband had been openly threatened by the former provincial councillor.
Mr. Kumara was remanded by the Puttalam Acting Magistrate on charges that he had made the teacher kneel in his presence and the presence of the teaching staff and students on June 14 but he was released on bail by Anamaduwa District Judge Ranga Disanayaka on July 11.
The former PC member is reported to have applied for nomination for the upcoming elections to the North-Western Provincial Council (NMPC). However, his application was likely to be rejected by the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).
Meanwhile several teachers’ unions had threatened to boycott election duties if his nomination was accepted.
