Forest officer says killed man in self-defence

A forest conservati­on field officer of the Forest Range Office in Ihalapuliy­ankulama had shot a person to death with his official fire arm, Mahawilach­chiya Police said.

The victim has been identified as Jayasinha Appuhamila­ge Ranjith Kumara (34), a farther of two children who lived at Ihala Puliynkula­ma.

According to the Police, the incident had taken place last Friday night outside the Forest Range Office at Ihalapuliy­ankulama in Elayaya Pattuwa.

Forest officer H.S. Deepthi Kumara had surrendere­d to the Oyamaduwa Police post after the shooting incident along with the firearm.

He was produced before the Anuradhapu­ra Acting Magistrate Buwaneka Rajakaruna by Mahavilach­chiya Police. The Magistrate ordered him to be

remanded until 31st of this month.

The suspect had informed the police that Ranjith kumara had forcibly entered the Forest Range Office on 26th night with a knife, and threatened to kill him over the confiscati­on of a load of illegal timber, and then he fired Ranjith kumara in self defence.

Meanwhile, victim’s relations said the suspect had shot Ranjith Kumara as a result of a personal dispute which occurred the previous night at a wedding ceremony. They further said the forest officer had been drunk at the time of shooting.
