Forest officer says killed man in self-defence
A forest conservation field officer of the Forest Range Office in Ihalapuliyankulama had shot a person to death with his official fire arm, Mahawilachchiya Police said.
The victim has been identified as Jayasinha Appuhamilage Ranjith Kumara (34), a farther of two children who lived at Ihala Puliynkulama.
According to the Police, the incident had taken place last Friday night outside the Forest Range Office at Ihalapuliyankulama in Elayaya Pattuwa.
Forest officer H.S. Deepthi Kumara had surrendered to the Oyamaduwa Police post after the shooting incident along with the firearm.

remanded until 31st of this month.
The suspect had informed the police that Ranjith kumara had forcibly entered the Forest Range Office on 26th night with a knife, and threatened to kill him over the confiscation of a load of illegal timber, and then he fired Ranjith kumara in self defence.
Meanwhile, victim’s relations said the suspect had shot Ranjith Kumara as a result of a personal dispute which occurred the previous night at a wedding ceremony. They further said the forest officer had been drunk at the time of shooting.
