Teenager robs old woman to buy a present for girlfriend

A man who allegedly robbed an elderly woman of her belongings by strangling her, to find money to buy a present for his girlfriend was arrested by the police and was produced in court. He was remanded till August 2, by Nawalapiti­ya Magistrate L.K. Mahinda.

The 19-year-old suspect identified as Abdul Raheem Mohamed Ajmal had fallen in love with a Muslim girl by chatting on the phone.

After the girl had expressed her wish to have a dress as a present for the Ramadan worth around Rs. 12,000, this frustrated young man had robbed the elderly woman.

He had secretly entered the old woman's house and strangled her until she collapsed before removing her gold necklace and the ring.

Having seen that the woman was still alive, he had stabbed her with a knife.

After regaining consciousn­ess, the woman had cried for help. The neighbours had come to her rescue and rushed her to Nawalapiti­ya hospital.
