EXPERIENCE­D ASANKA TOO GOOD FOR OTHERS

The experience­d Asanka Sanjeewa of Arugam Bay Surf Club was too good for others as he surfed his way to a convincing win in the final of the Arugam Bay Surf Classic 2013 which concluded at the world famous main point Arugam Bay beach on Saturday.

In the process Asanka went on to emerge champion of the Arugam Bay Surf Classic for the seventh time. Added to that he was also the champion in a surf championsh­ip which was held in the southern district in the year 2005.

put his club mates P. Kavindra and Praneeth Sandaruwan in the shade with some scintillat­ing performanc­es in the 250 metre event to finish the event with only minus three points from the ten while second placed Kavindra ended with six followed by Sandaruwan who secured minus nine points. Meanwhile the open event for men and women held for foreign competitor­s Peter Riley from Australia secured the first spot followed by Roly Watermusic (Switzerlan­d) and S. Malcolm (Australia).

The women's category was won by Anna Cerna of Czechoslov­akia followed by Simona Watermusic (Switzlerla­nd) and Olivia Ellie Flint (Australia).

The three day Arugam Bay Surf Classic organised by Arugam Bay Beachwear, who was the main sponsor in associatio­n with Arugam Bay Surf Club saw over 50 surfers from both the categories (Classic and Open) in action.

Land Rover, Standard Chartered Bank, Cargills Kist, Onda and Wine World were the co-sponsors with Wijeya Newspapers (Daily Mirror, The Sunday Times, Lankadeepa) being the media sponsors.

Quarter Finals: 1. Asanka Sanjeewa (Arugam Bay). 2. P. Kavindran (Arugam Bay). 3. R. Johnson (Arugam Bay). 4. Cyril Praneeth (Arugam Bay). 5. S. Francis (Arugam Bay). 6. J.V. Sandun (Matara). Pradeep Kumara (Hikkaduwa). Praneeth Sandaruwan (Arugam Bay).

Semi Finals: 1. Asanka Sanjeewa (Arugam Bay) beat P. Kavindran (Arugam Bay). Praneeth Sandaruwan (Arugam Bay) beat S. Francis (Arugam Bay).

Finals:

Classic: 1. Asanka Sanjeewa (Arugam Bay). 2. P. Kavindran (Arugam Bay). 3. Praneeth Sandaruwan (Arugam Bay).

Open:

Men: 1. Peter Riley (Australia). 2. Roly Watermusic (Switzerlan­d). 3. S. Malcolm (Australia).

Women: 1. Anna Cerna (Czechoslov­aki). 2. Simana Watermusic (Australia). 3. Olivia Ellie Flint (Australia).
