Moratuwa Mayor Samanlal Fernando and four others who appeared before Moratuwa Magistrate W. Aravinda Fernando on charges of having prevented the new principal of Prince of Wales College from reporting for duty were yesterday released on bail.

Among the other four other were School Development Society Secretary Aruna Ramya Kumara; Past Pupils Association Secretary Shran Dilruk; Past Pupils’ Association Vice President Ayeshan Ferdinandus and a resident Asoka Kumarasinghe.

They had been summoned by the magistrate to appear in Court over a report submitted by the Motaruwa police. Police told court the protestors had retained the keys of the main gate and that by using loudspeakers they had disturbed the students appearing for the term test.

The Magistrate said the new principal had a legitimate right to assume duties on the instructions of the Education Department and that it was illegal to obstruct him from reporting for duty. The suspects were warned that if they did not desist from committing any unruly act amounting to breach of peace they would be arrested.

School’s Acting Principal Subhashini Kapuruwatta was warned by the Magistrate to maintain discipline in the school and prevent students from joining any protest.
