Permanent rail gates on the Puttalam lines

The Railway Department begun to replace bamboo barriers placed at unguarded level crossings in the Puttalam line with permanent gates. The project is being implemente­d through police stations in the respective areas. The Railway Department provided funds to the Police Department to implement the project.

A senior official of the Railway Department said the estimated cost of installing a gate would be about Rs.62, 000. He said permanent rail gates were now being installed in the Puttalam, Mundalama and Wanathavil­luwa police areas. Earlier the department had installed bamboo barriers at 31 unprotecte­d railway crossings each being manned by gatemen employed

The project is being implemente­d through police stations in the respective areas

on a casual basis. Permanent rail gates will also be installed on the Chilaw –Puttalam line, the Palavi Cement Factory line, and the Puttalam – Wanathavil­luwa - Aruwakkalu line.
