NEW LOOK FOR SEVERAL HOUSING SCHEMES IN COLOMBO
The Housing and Common Amenities Ministry has decided to renovate 12 housing schemes in Colombo at an estimated cost of Rs.476 million well before the November Commonwealth Heads Of Government Meeting (CHOGM), an official said yesterday.
He said the housing schemes lined up for renovation were those at Sri Sangharaja Mawatha, Mohamed Masjid Housing Scheme at Maradana, Gunasinghapura Housing Scheme at Pettah, the Bloemendhal Housing Scheme, Samapura Housing Scheme at Maradana, Mihindu Mawatha, the Sucharitha Housing Schemes at Pettah and the Palliayawatta and Sirimapura Housing Schemes at Orugodawatta.
“Minister Wimal Weerawansa has obtained cabinet approval for the renovation projects to be carried out by the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA). The renovation programme is being carried out by the NHDA and will be completed before the start of the CHOGM. The beautification programme of Colombo will be meaningless if these housing schemes remain in their dilapidated condition when the CHOGM is held in Lanka,” the spokesman said.
He said most of the housing schemes had been built several decades ago and no renovation was carried out since then.
In addition to these projects, the NHDA will also renovate Stewart Street Housing scheme in Colombo Central, Sahaspura and Singhapura at a cost of Rs.880 million under ‘Nagamu Purawara’ programme.
