Thirty two teams qualify to the second round

The completion of the Under 17 Division One cricket tournament which was contested by 76 schools around the island divided into 11 groups saw 32 teams advance to the second round which is scheduled to be get underway early next month.

Among the 32 teams to qualify were defending champions Royal Panadura and Ananda Colombo. The second round matches will be played on a league basis with the 32 teams being divided into eight groups. The leaders and runners up of each will qualify to play in the pre-quarter final.

The leaders and runners up each group will qualify to play in the pre-quarter final with the matches being played on a knockout basis.

Royal Colombo, Lumbini MV, St. Peter’s, St. Sebastian’s Moratuwa, Maris Stella Negombo, Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa, St. Anthony’s Katugastot­a, Trinity Kandy, Richmond Galle, St. Aloysius’ Galle and Sri Sumangala Panadura were the group champions in the first round.

THE QUALIFIED TEAMS:

Group “P” – Royal Colombo, Ibbagamuwa MMV, Maliyadeva Kurunegala, St. Anthony’s Wattala

Group “Q” – Lumbini MV, Bandaranay­ake College Gampaha, St. Sylvester’s Kandy, Sandalanka Central College.

Group “R” – St. Peter’s, Na- landa, Debarawewa National School, Vidyartha Kandy

Group “S” – St. Sebastian’s Moratuwa, D.S.Senanayake Colombo, Dharmasoka MV Ambalangod­a, Dharmaraja Kandy.

Group “T” - Maris Stella Negombo, Moratu MV, St. Joseph’s, Sri Sumangala Panadura

Group “U” – Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa, Thurstan, S. Thomas’ Mt. Lavinia, Royal Panadura.

Group “V” – St. Anthony’s Katugastot­a, St.Thomas’ Matara, St. Benedict’s Kotahena, St. Aloysius Galle.

Group “W” – Trinity Kandy, Sri Devananda Ambalangod­a, President’s College Kotte, Richmond Galle.
