Education Minister Bandula Gunawarden­a vehemently condemned the action of the Royal College teacher who had climbed onto the roof of the college to protest against her transfer orders. The minister said it was a shameful act and brought the profession into disrepute. He said that once she got down from the roof he would hold a disciplina­ry inquiry and the maximum punishment would be meted out to her.

The minister said that teachers were regarded as gods, and they should set an example to the students and parents. The teacher concerned had been transferre­d as she had completed more than eight years, and there was a policy to transfer teachers who had served for eight years in the same school. The minister said the transfer had been made in keeping with the regulation­s of the department, and her refusal to accept the transfer was an act of indiscipli­ne.
