Sports instructor arrested

- BY SUDATH PUBUDU KEERTHI

A sports instructor of a school in Galnewa was arrested on suspicion of having attempted to sexually abuse two female students of the school at a guest house in Waduwegama in Biyagama, police said.

It was reported that the two 16year-old female students had been brought to Biyagama on the pretext of having to undergo a medical examination if they were to partake in sports activities.

The 33-year-old sports instructor, a father of three children, was produced before Mahara Magistrate Dharshika Wimalasiri and remanded til August 12. The two students were admitted to the Ragama hospital for a medical examination.

Sources revealed that the suspect had visited the guest house with the two students and reserved two rooms, informing that another school teacher would arrive shortly. The students were booked into separate rooms when the alert guesthouse keeper had observed the suspect inside the room of one of the students.

Sensing something was amiss he had informed the Biyagama police. After the teacher was arrested police found several photos stored in his laptop of students posing topless .

It is believed that the suspect had obtained permission from the students’ parents for the students who had excelled in sports, to accompany him for these bogus medical tests. Kelaniya SSP C.E. Vidisinghe and ASP Udaya Hemantha are conducting further investigations.
