The committee meeting was chaired by Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa and attended by House Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva, Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga and Parliament Secretary General W.B.D. Dasanayake.

The Madiwela housing complex was built in 1994. It will be relocated in the new township of Thalapathp­itiya on a block of land identified for this purpose with all the required facilities.

The Finance and Planning Ministry will guide and supervise the constructi­on of the new housing complex by M/s Sumitomo Mitsui Constructi­on Company Ltd. The Cabinet approval will be obtained for the proposal soon. However, the cost of the project is yet to be ascertaine­d.

It was noted that the electrical and mechanical systems in the Madiwela complex have to be repaired or replaced due to frequent breakdowns. The committee has also identified the need to develop the landscape. The work is expected to be completed before the 2014 budget in November.
