UNP asks govt. to act on LLRC recommendations

- BY YOHAN PERERA

Condemning the incident that took place in Grandpass on Saturday (10), surrounding a mosque, the United National Party yesterday urged the government to immediately set up a mechanism to ensure that communal or religious tension or friction does not lead to conflict as recommended by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).

UNP National List MP Dr. Harsha De Silva, who condemned the incident, said that the government should implement the recommendations made by the LLRC in this regard. He said government should make every effort to stop such incidents which threaten religious and ethnic harmony from occurring while ensuring that action was taken to instill a sense of security and confidence among the ethnic and religious groups as mentioned by the LLRC. “It is essential that these steps are implemented while all ethnic and religious groups should realize that they cannot suppress the people of another faith,” the UNP MP said. He also wanted to know why the police and the security forces did not take action to stop the mobs from engaging in violence at the time.

UNP Member of the Western Provincial Council Mujibur Rahaman said that all religious and ethnic groups should preserve the values that are included in the national anthem which says “We are all children of one mother.” We all sing these words but it is pointless of singing these lyrics if we don’t honour their meaning,” he
