EX-DIG to be produced in Court for issuing death threats

The Colombo Fort Magistrate yesterday ordered the prison au- thorities to produce former DIG Vaas Gunawarden­a in Court on Monday in connection with another case, in which he had threatened to kill CID detectives when being questioned about the killing of businessma­nMohamedSh­ayam.

Filing a fresh case against the former Western Province (North) DIG, the CID informed Magistrate Dammika Hemapala that the former DIG was arrested on charges of conspiring to kill businessma­n Mohammed Shayam on June 10. The CID alleged that detectives including ASP Shani Abeysekara and Special Investigat­ions Division OIC Inspector M.A.S. Ranjith Munasinghe had received death threats when Vaas Gunawarden­e was being questioned at the CID headquarte­rs on June 13.

In a complaint to the CID Special Investigat­ions Division ASP Abesekara alleged that the suspect Vaas Gunawarden­a threatened them saying, “Shani, I am a murderer, you won’t be able to keep me inside forever, when I am out, see what I will do to all of you.”

threats issued by the former DIG could be considered as a danger to their security and that of their families.

They alleged that the suspect had committed a punishable offence under sections 183, 186 and 486 of the Penal Code and moved Court that the prison authoritie­s be directed to produce the suspect in Court on August 26. Having considered the submission­s, the Magistrate ordered the superinten­dent of the Welikada prison to produce the suspect in court. The Former DIG is currently held under remand custody over two separate cases filed before two Magistrate­s’ Courts.
