Colombo Drag Races tomorrow

The oldest Motor racing Club in the country - The Ceylon Motor Sports Club - will join hands with the Sri Lanka Air Force to organise the "Colombo Drag Race" at the Katukurund­a Air Force strip in Kalutara this Sunday August 25 commencing at 8.30 a.m.

A drag race is an accelerati­on contest between two vehicles of the same capacity from a standing start over a measured distance. The distance in this competitio­n will be 375 metres and the contest will be started by beans of an electronic device commonly called a Christmas tree. Upon leaving the start line the contestant­s will race upto the finish line and will slow down to a greatly reduced speed after passing the finish line.

in Sri Lanka - The Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS) has given the green light to organise and conduct the races which will be a thriller as two vehicles will race in a neck to neck fashion.

The President of the Ceylon Motor Sports Club Niroshan Pereira said that they have put in place the required safety measures as recommende­d by the governing body. Seat belts, roller cages, helmets and overalls being mandatory will create the benchmark while strict scrutin- ising will be carried out to ensure that the care are safe to run.

TagHuer Electronic Timing Equipment will be used by the organizers to time the contestant­s while the start and finish will be equipped with live cameras to ensure that there are no foul starts and they are clean and the monitor photo will photograph the finish which will be handy in case of protests or disputes. The classes on which this race will be conducted are - Cars upto 1000 cc, Cars from 1101 cc upto 1300 cc, Cars from 1301 cc to 1500cc, Cars from 1501 cc to 1600 cc, Cars from 1601cc to 2200cc, Motor cycles from 250cc to 600 cc, Cars upto 1600cc Turbo open, Cars open 2 wheel drive, Cars upto 3500cc and Stock Turbo, Motor Bikes over 900cc, Class Trucks and Jeeps open, Motor bikes 250cc and above Super Motard Open, Special Event - Yamaha YZ 150.
