Samsung announced the simultaneous launch of the new Galaxy Note 3 and companion Galaxy Gear into the Sri Lankan market yesterday.

Considered a cross between a tablet and a phone, the new Galaxy Note 3 features a 5.7 inch HD Super AMOLED display, slimmer, lighter hardware design and a 13 megapixel rear camera.

The Galaxy Note 3 comes with improved S Pen functionality, including the utilization of Air Commands to give users access to powerful features simply by clicking the S Pen while hovering over the screen.

Also included in the launch was Galaxy Gear, a new concept watch-like device that allows users to stay connected to their Galaxy Note 3 while providing a range of features such as previews of incoming text messages and emails.

“We have had a remarkable partnership with Samsung since our partnership in 2010. We have seen the Samsung brand develop both globally and locally to dominate the market. The Galaxy Note 3 is yet another product in what is an ever-improving range of products from Samsung and we are very confident of the brand’s continued growth in Sri Lanka,” John Keells Head of IT Sujeewa Dewaraja stated.

Speaking during the launch event, Dewaraja went on to elaborate on key obstacles to the Samsung business in Sri Lanka, namely in the form of unauthorized sales of Samsung products in the local market.

“John Keells Of fice Automation is the only authorized dealer of Samsung com- munication devices in Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, we are finding that while Samsung is the clear market leader in the local smartphone market, as much as half of all Samsung phones may be brought to the country from parallel sources.

There are several instances of fake Samsung phones which look like the real product, or reconditioned or stolen devices being sold locally and this ultimately is to the detriment of the customer and is therefore definitely a factor to take note of,” Dewaraja stated.

The Galaxy Note 3 will retail at a price of Rs.124,900 while the Galaxy Gear will retail for Rs.56,900 and will be available at all Samsung experience centres and its islandwide distributors.

Samsung is also working with network operators to offer customers special packages on the Galaxy Note 3.
