LTL expands presence in Africa

Recently, LTL completed the Internatio­nal Developmen­t Agency (subsidiary of World Bank)-funded, rural electrific­ation project in Kenya. It involves of constructi­ng a medium voltage electrific­ation scheme, covering 99km of 33kV lines and 120km of low voltage lines and installati­on of associated low voltage equipment, including distributi­on transforme­rs to the provinces around the famous Mount Kenya in Central Kenya. To coincide with the visit of President Mahinda Rajapakse to Kenya, the completed project was formally handed over to Kenya Power by LTL.

In the meantime, in mid-December, Ugandan President Yoweri Musaveni officially launched the West Nile Grid Extension project at Arua, capital of the West Nile Region in Uganda, which is to be executed by the LTL Group.

The KFW and European Union-funded West Nile Grid extension project, is worth over Euro 17 million and involves the constructi­on of 395kms of 33kV power distributi­on lines, 200kms of low voltage lines and supply and installati­on of 150 nos of distributi­on transforme­rs manufactur­ed in Sri Lanka.

LTL Group outbid several leading companies such as KEC (India), Jyoti Structures (India), Chint (China) and Siemens (South Africa/Germany) to secure the contract, which will be completed in 20 months.

LTL has successful­ly won tenders worth over US $ 80 million in the last three years in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania and is becoming a strong force in the power sector of South East Africa.

LTL Holdings has also being exporting transforme­rs to Ethiopia and Botswana for several years now.
