The sprats were imported from Dubai

A large consignment of sprats, found to be outdated, was confiscated by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) during a raid carried out at a mega storage facility at Elakanda in Wattala yesterday.

The consignment of sprats imported from Dubai that weighed over 47, 000 kgs, was said to be worth about Rs. 30 million, and was being readied for release into the local market. “Already around 2,500 Kgs of outdated sprats had been released to the market after mixing them with sprats that were in good condition at a warehouse in Pettah,” Cooperative and Internal Trade Ministry spokesman, Nipun Ekanayake revealed. He said that the owner of the warehouse would be brought to the Wattala Magistrate Court to face charges on Friday (10). Minister Johnston Fernando had instructed the Chairman of the CAA to carry out such raids in order to protect the public from such unscrupulous merchants and to bring them to justice.
