LOTUS TOWER PHASE II TO HOUSE MASSIVE MALL AND CAR PARK
Anew shopping mall and massive car park was set to be constructed under the second phase of the Lotus Tower project, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) said yesterday.
The Lotus Tower being constructed down D. R. Wijewardena Mawatha would be the tallest building in the country. Complete with communication towers, museums, food courts and administrative offices the tower would be a communication hub for the public and private sectors.
Speaking to Daily Mirror, TRC Acting Director U.H.C Priyantha said plans for the second phase were being drawn and discussions were being held at the moment.
“Under the second phase of the Lotus Tower project we will be constructing a massive car park and a shopping mall. The design and planning will be done by the University of Moratuwa,” he said.
Priyantha said construction of three levels of the building was completed and the tower was scheduled to be completed and declared open in March 2015.
The Tower constructed at a cost of USD 104 million was funded by the TRC. Chinese Bank had provided the Commission with the necessary loans for the construction. “Eighty per cent of the cost will be covered through that and the remainder will be footed by us,” he said stressing that the loan would be repaid by the TRC and not the government.
Media reports on the project suggested that the tower was set to provide a base for antennas of service providers in telecommunications, telecasting, broadcasting and transmissions related to defence.
