JAVELIN GOES ASTRAY AND STRIKES SCHOOLBOY’S FACE

During practice for the sports meet at Embilipiti­ya Maha Vidyalaya, Panamura last morning, a seventeen year old schoolboy was seriously injured when a javelin accidental­ly struck him in the face just below his left eye.

The javelin had entered his body at a point just below the left eye and penetrated it to a depth of about six inches.The injured boy had been rushed to the Embilipiti­ya hospital with the javelin still in place,

and the doctors had cut off most of the exposed portion of the javelin and transferre­d the boy to the Colombo National Hospital for surgery to remove the portion that had entered his body.

The injured boy identified as K M Gayan Madushanka is in the A/L class of the college and also a prefect. Hospital sources said the accident had occurred during practice for the sports meet; a javelin thrown by a schoolboy had gone astray and struck the victim who had been on the school grounds. A scan was to be carried out at the Colombo National Hospital prior to the removal of the embedded portion of the javelin.
