Devious a’port taxi operators taking people for a ride

- BY SUPUN DIAS

The police yesterday warned the public to be cautious of private airport taxi operators, following reports of several robberies that had taken place when people were returning home from the Katunayake airport.

Police said most of the victims complained that they had fallen asleep after the driver of the taxi offered them a soft drink during the journey.

The victims have lost cash, jewellery and other belongings worth millions of rupees due to such robberies carried out by these individuals. However during investigations it was found out that these incidents had taken place in the vicinity of the Pettah Central Bus Stand as well. According to investigations these individuals befriend the victim before offering them a taxi ride back to home at a lower rate. Investigations are carried out by the Western Province (North) Crime Investigations Division but no arrests have been made so far.
