UPUL DECLARED ELECTED AS BASL PRESIDENT THIS YEAR
Attorney-at-law Upul Jayasuriya was unanimously elected as the President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka for the year of 2014/2015.
Though the two nominations for the office of President of the BASL for the year 2014/2015 were received, the nomination submitted by R. R. Thangarajah was rejected by the returning officer as he was disqualified to contest in terms of the constitution of the BASL.
Meanwhile, Attorney-at- Law Ajith Pathirana was unanimously elected as the Secretary to the BASL as the only candidate who submitted nomination for the post.
The nominations for the President and Secretary of the BASL for the year 2014/2015 were accepted by Solicitor General Y. J. Wije- tilake PC, who acted as the Returning Officer.
The current BASL President Upul Jayasuriya's name was proposed by three sen ior former Presidents of the BASL, Romesh de Silva PC, Upali Gunaratna PC, and Ikram Mohamed PC. and seconded by Rohan Sahabandu PC, Prasanna Jayawardena PC, and Amal Randeniya - President Colombo Law Society.
During the previous election Mr. Jayasuriya was elected with the highest ever majority of BASL securing a majority of 2047 votes against his closest rival Tirantha Walaliyadde.
