Prestige Automobile cricket gets underway this week-end

Prestige Automobile (Pvt) Ltd. will sponsor the MCA “C” Division 50- over league tournament 2014 for the third consecutiv­e year. This was revealed at a sponsorshi­p ceremony held on Wednesday, January 8 at the MCA Pavilion Lounge.

Hans A Reuter handed over the sponsorshi­p package to Ashley Ratnayake, President /MCA.

Also present at the ceremony were Ranjith Jayawarden­a, General Manager, Business Developmen­t, Prestige Automobile (Pvt) Ltd, Prasanna de Silva General Manager, Sales and Marketing Hyundai Lanka, Rohana Dissanayak­e, General Secretary and Mahesh de Alwis Chairman, Tournament Committee (both from MCA)

The tournament will mark a significan­ce this year, as the MCA newly laid turf, restored after 23 years which was ceremonial­ly opened on January 5, 2014, will be used as a match venue, hoisting 13 matches.

The following 10 teams pooled into two groups will be vying for the “BMWHyundai” Trophy. Group “A”: Arpico SC, PABC Bank, MAS Linea Aqua, Kanrich Fiancé and Hayleys Group RC (except for Arpico, the rest are new to this division)

Group “B”: Mobitel, Merchant Bank, SL (Insurance), Dialog Axiata, MAS Silueta and Janashakth­i Insurance (except for Mobitel and MBSL, the rest are new to this division) Flash back to 2013: In a Bankers battle, HSBC “A” lifted the BMW-Hyundai Trophy, beating commercial Bank “A” by 36-runs in the final at the P. Sara Oval.

The league segment of the tournament will get underway this week-end, January 11 and 12 with a card of 5 matches. On Saturday, January 11, Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka (Insurance) and Janashakth­i Insurance will be the first two teams to play on the MCA new turf.The other match venues are Army ground, Panagoda, Surray ground, Maggona, FTZ ground, Katunayake, and Colts and Bloomfield ground.

The league segment, consisting 20 matches will conclude on January 29, 2014, and at this point, the first four teams of each group will advance to the knock-out stage quarter -finals.

The eliminatio­n stage matches will take place on February 1 and 2 (Quarter -finals), February 8 and 9 (Semi-finals) and the final on February 15 at the MCA ground.

All matches will be supervised by an MCA appointed Match Referee. The BMW special awards on offer are for the Best Batsman, Bowler and Man of the Tournament (based on performanc­es in the group stage matches) and for the Man-of-the-Match in the final.
