Urgent need for e-waste management in Sri Lanka Military-run businesses may cause problems if compete: CB official
Competition between civilian and military-run businesses may have an adverse impact on the wider economy, according to Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Deputy Governor, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe.
Responding to a query regarding the military’s contribution towards growth statistics of the Northern Province, Weerasinghe reiterated the wider importance of the military in terms of catalyzing development in the region.
“It would have been highly likely that the development of the Northern and Eastern province would have been delayed by as much as 5 years if the military had not been directed towards reconstruction in these areas.
“They were brought in at a time when the private sector was still very reluctant to establish themselves and so they went in immediately and filled a crucial gap and I believe this is a very productive use of their resources and capabilities.” Weerasinghe asserted.
