The Eastern Provincial Council (EPC) announced plans to hold an international investment promotion forum to attract international and local investors to the Eastern part of the country.
The EPC Minister of Agriculture, Animal Production & Development, Rural Industries Development and Fisheries & Tourism Naseer Ahamed addressing a press conference yesterday in Colombo said, the conference will be held next Friday at the Taj Samudra hotel with the participation of Economic and Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.
“Over 300 international and local corporate leaders are expected to participate at the forum. The Eastern Province is a ‘investment hot spot’ of South Asia’ with great potential in terms of availability of resources and attractive incentives and facilities offered by the government.
We are focusing on attracting investments in the fields of agriculture, fisheries, livestock development, dairy farming, tourism, industries and other unexplored areas which have export potential. The theme of the initiative is ‘Seizing Employment and Wealth Creation Opportunities of the Eastern Sri Lanka,” Ahamed explained.
He further noted that Eastern Province is ideal for crop production with more scope for expanded development. According to him, there are vast opportunities for production of rice and development of rice based value-added products for domestic use as well as international markets.
“The province is well endowed with various physical and natural resources making it essentially an agricultural area. Investment opportunities will also be offered in other sectors: fisheries, livestock and milk processing.”
The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Production and Development, Fisheries, Rural Industries Development and Tourism of the Eastern Provincial Council will be holding the forum in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Investment Promotion.
The event is also backed by Board of Investments, Sri Lanka Tourism, Sri Lankan Convention Bureau, Batticaloa District Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture and the Chamber of Tourism and Industry Sri Lanka.
