Three committees to handle UNP nominations

The UNP Leadership Council yesterday decided to appoint three committees chaired by senior party members to handle nominations for the upcoming provincial council elections, informed sources said.

Accordingly parliamentarian P Harrison would head the committee to handle nominations in the Western Province while MP Joseph Michael Perera has been appointed chairman of the committee handling nominations for the Southern province. The nominations in the Uva province would be handled by a committee headed by Gamini Jayawickrama Perera.

These three committees would be given the task of short listing candidates and preparing the final lists.

Meanwhile it had been decided to reinstate MPs Palitha Range Bandara and Asoka Abeysinghe as party organizers following a decision made earlier.

Asked whether any decision was made on giving two dissident members Maithri Gunaratne and Shiral Laktilake the ticket to contest the provincial council elections, sources said this issue was not taken up for discussions at yesterday’s meeting.

The leadership Council met in the Parliamentary complex with its Chairman Karu Jayasuriya at the chair.
