Release ‘political prisoners’ : NPC
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) controlled Northern Provincial Council (NPC) has passed a resolution calling for a general amnesty for LTTE suspects being held in custody, officials said yesterday.
The resolution, which refers to the LTTE suspects as political prisoners, was adopted unanimously at the NPC sessions on January 9.
NPC Chairman C.V.K. Sivagnanam told Daily Mirror that a large number of “political prisoners” are being held under detention for a long time.
“Another resolution calling for the suspension of interviews for certain recruitments was also adopted unanimously,” he said.
Stephen J. Rapp, the US Ambassador on War Crimes, is also reported to have made inquiries about the status of those being detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
