More than 25,000 errant traders nabbed in 2013

As many as 25,117 traders have been charged with violation of Consumer Protection Act last year, the ministry of Cooperativ­es and Internal Trade said yesterday.

Ministry Media Spokesman Nipun Ekanayake said the violations had been high in the Colombo district. Accordingl­y 3024 traders have been charged in the Colombo District and legal action had been taken against 3000 traders.

In addition 2484 raids have been carried out in Gampaha, 2745 in Kandy, 1809 in Kurunegala, 1539 in Kegalle and 1422 in Puttalam during the year.

ported that a large consignmen­t of food items unsuitable for consumptio­n had been recovered last year. These included fruits, vegetables, rice, dried fish and cooking oil. The Consumer Affairs Authority had collected a sum of 82 million through fines imposed on errant traders during the year.
