NEW HOPE FROM RESEARCH ON SAMPLES OF INDIGENOUS RICE

Consumptio­n could control spread of non-communicab­le diseases

The Industrial Technology Institute, the pioneer Scientific Research & Developmen­t Organisati­on in Sri Lanka had said that by consuming indigenous varieties of rice, non-communicab­le diseases like diabetes, cancer, and anaemia, which are spreading fast in Sri Lanka could be dispelled.

The Institute’s Senior Deputy Director of the Food Technology Division Dr Ilmi Hewajulige said, their research during the past seven years had led them to make this announceme­nt public.

Heenati rice could cure cancer, Masuran and Gonabaru variet- ies cure diabetes, and for anaemia Red Heenati, Pachcha Perumal, Black Heenati and Kattamanja­l which contain iron and proteins are good as cures, the research had further indicated.

These findings had been made after the samples of the indigenous rice obtained from the agricultur­e department were subjected to a series of research and tests.
