One injured during chaos at Galle MC meeting

A tense situation prevailed at Galle Municipali­ty between the ruling party and opposition members when it met yesterday (11) to appoint the new committees for 2014.

During the altercatio­n that took place, the secretary of the municipali­ty, who collapsed due to the pushing and shoving that was taking place, had to be taken to hospital for treatment. The municipal hall was also damaged in the fracas.

acting Mayor Kelum Seneviratn­a said that there was a short delay and a postponeme­nt had been adopted with eight votes for and none against. He said that this was to allow the Muslim members to attend to religious activities in mosques.

There were eight opposition members and ten ruling party members in the Municipali­ty. The former Mayor, Methsiri De Silva, had been removed from his post.
