New-born baby found in paddy land

A day old infant wrapped in a polythene bag had been left in an abandoned paddy field at Malamulla in Panadura early yesterday. The infant was found when residents rushed to the area after hearing its cries.

Later the child with bleeding injuries was admitted to the Ketumathi hospital for women in Panadura where the child is being treated in the intensive care unit.

Panadura police are conducting investigations to trace the whereabouts of the mother. Doctors believe that the mother had left the infant hours after delivery.
