An imposter of wanted accused sentenced

A man who appeared in court and impersonat­ed an accused under arrest warrant was sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonme­nt and fined Rs.3000 by the Panadura Chief Magistrate Ruchira Weliwatta.

The accused who had been released on bail was evading court and the surety for the bail bond had set another man to appear in court as the accused.

However, the police who knew the real accused informed the magistrate that the man appearing in court was an imposter.

When the magistrate held an immediate inquiry into the matter, the suspect pleaded guilty of impersonat­ion. The surety for the bail bond of the main accused was remanded till January 17, 2014 and an arrest warrant was issued on the accused.
