SUPER FIGHTER SEASON ONE STARTS FROM TODAY

It’s going to be a revolution for the sport of boxing when MAS Holdings and MTV/MBC join together to launch the Super Fighter Season One reality sports programme on January 13 in the Gampaha District.

This was revealed at a press briefing held at the MTV/MBC headquarte­rs which was graced by Aubrey Peiris, President of ABA, Ms Nedra Weerasingh­e, Group Director, Electronic Media Business MTV/MBC, Chevaan Daniel Group Director The Capitol Maharaja Organisati­on, Dian Gomes, Group Director MAS Holdings, Ruwan Keragala, Director Finance MAS Intimates and a host of other dignitarie­s.

The two-day programme will be the first of the many that has been lined up to be conducted in all the districts around the island which will have the blessings of the Boxing Associatio­n of Sri Lanka (BASL).

Dian Gomes, briefing the media said that it’s a great day for Sri Lanka boxing and this concept will no doubt take boxing to a new level. This will give an opportunit­y for youngsters from North to South and we know that there is abundant talent in the village.

I have the confidence that the Sri Lankan boxers are capable of bringing an Olympic gold medal and we know boxing prospects are going to come from the outstation­s.

So the Super Fighter, the first reality sports programme, will be a game changer for boxing in Sri Lanka, by granting access to would-be pugilists across the country to take their first step to make their dreams come true.

MAS Holdings is known for creating opportunit­ies for champions in various discipline by picking untapped raw talent from rural areas, and we are proud to join in this worthy concept.

Ms Nedra speaking on the occasion emphasized, “With Super Fighter partnering with MAS Holdings we bring yet another first to Sri Lanka to provide a platform to showcase their talent and give the youth of Sri Lanka to pursue their dreams.”

Chevaan stressed: “To us this is all about opportunit­y, giving raw Sri Lanka talent the opportunit­y to shine. To give a young Sri Lankan from a rural village the chance to fight under lights in Colombo…and who knows even in Rio in 2016. ”

With a clear and determined dream of fulfilling internatio­nal glory the Super Fighter is a powerful innovating concept set to galvanise young people across the island. A hundred pugilists comprising four weight categories will be selected from the talent search of Super Fighter Season One scheduled to be held around the country from January to March. This will be pruned down to 16 after which the final eight will vie for the four top awards in the four weight categories.

The district level preliminar­ies consists of two day boxing camps which will be handled by trained boxing coaches who will shortlist prospectiv­e candidates for the grand Super Fighter finale scheduled to be held in late June or early July.

Ruwan Keragala briefing the media said that no cash awards will be given as the Super Fighter Season One is for youngsters who are under 18 years of age.

The winner of each of the four categories will be given scholarshi­ps by MAS Holdings. The school of the winners too will benefit where MAS Holdings will support them with sporting equipment and other useful items required by the school.

Joining MAS Holdings and MTV/MBC for the unique islandwide talent search will be Bhareti Airtel Lanka who will be the official telecommun­ication provider and Allianz Insurance the official insurance partner.

The first four scheduled programmes:

January 13/14 – Gampaha District – Bandaranay­ake MV Gampaha. January 17/18 – Kurunegala/Puttalam Districts – Pannal National School. January 24/25 – Ratnapura/Kegalle Districts – Seevali MMC Ratnapura. January 31/February 1 – Batticaloa/Ampara Districts – D.S. Senanayake MV Ampara.
