The 38th death anniversary of one of Sri Lanka’s most distinguished poets Mahagama Sekara falls today.

The late Mahagama Sekara who was also a teacher, lyricist, playwright, novelist and filmmaker was born in Radawana on April 7, 1929. He passed away on January 14, 1976.

Sekara is best known as a poet and songwriter with several of his works even becoming popular songs in Sri Lanka. His film‘Thun Mang Handiya’ won him the award for the Most Promising Director at the Awards Festival of the Film Critics and Journalists of Ceylon in 1971.
