Opportunists should be rejected by the people at this election

- BY CHATURANGA PRADEEP AND INDIKA SRI ARAVINDA

Western Province UPFA Candidate Hirunika Premachandra said that the voting pattern at this Provincial Council Election will depict whether the masses are in favour of unjustifiable killings or not.

Addressing an election meeting in Malabe, she stressed that many politicians were now engaging in politics for business gains and people were hoodwinked without their knowledge. The franchise granted to the people by the Constitution is being whittled away. She said the right to vote had been bartered away for a Bat, Ball or a Book, and she cautioned the people not to get deceived by these gimmicks.

She also said that at the moment in the Kolonnawa electorate, the environment was such that a young boy or a young girl could not live safely, and nothing of importance was recorded at the provincial councils or in the Hansard of the Parliament, but names of animals and nothing of educational value were contained therein.

She said those aspiring to be future leaders were those with only an educational qualification of passing the fifth grade or below. They are boastful in making promises of developing the country. Therefore the voters should be more intelligent and cautious in electing those who are genuinely bent on ushering development to the country. At a time when politics had become bitter, and hopeless as a result of uneducated and corrupt people being elected, the masses have got an opportunity to reject them, she said.
