The region around the Batticaloa lagoon would prosper due to the construction of the Manmunai Bridge and lead to the prosperity of the country, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said when he declared the new bridge open in Manmunai on Saturday. He also allayed fears that the opening of the bridge would cause injustice to one community.

“This bridge is of historical importance. Some are spreading false rumours that the opening of the bridge would cause injustice to a particular community. I wish to give an assurance at this place that no such thing will happen to any community.

He said that his government would carry out the development activities unabated despite the challenges.

“We will never forget the people and would never let them down,” the President said.

“People in this area underwent many difficulties in travelling. In recent times many politicians came here and made promises but they could not fulfil them. We have fulfilled it within a short period of time. Reconciliation is in place in the country today. We must uphold it and live in a peaceful manner. “Certain foreign powers are attempting to disrupt national unity. Also, certain Parliamentarians and politicians are spreading false propaganda.
