Delivering an anusasana to President Mahinda Rajapaksa the prelate said the main reason for the downfall of the values and virtues of the country was due to the corrupt behaviour of the government and opposition politicians and their unsuitability for politics.

The Thera further said that there was no accepted method for the selection of politicians unlike other fields. It is ironical that qualifications for electing candidates are regarded as those being drug addicts, gamblers, pavement thugs, actors and actresses and so on.

He added that they had used to obtain political power by hook or crook in the field of politics and requested the President to find ways and means so that gentleman politicians can enter politics properly and include laws in the constitution to facilitate it as a matter of priority. He also called on the President to bring in a set of qualifications before the next elections.

He said if due action is not going to be taken against corrupt and extremist politicians, then the country would be faced with a disastrous situation.

The media points out the weaknesses of the government in good faith. In order to root out the vices and corrupt practices of some politicians, the President must use his powers and also said that people would not distance themselves from the government if the President would take action to root out the corrupt politicians.
