- BY A.H.A.HUSSAIN

Liquor would be totally prohibited with immediate effect in Periya Madhu, Eravur Pattu, Eravurpattu Divisional Secretary U. Udayasridar said on Sunday, April 27.

He said that the widespread prevalence of poverty in the village was due to alcohol addiction in the village.

He announced the decision at a meeting organised by G.S. Ariyarasa on Sunday about the issue in the village. “The cooperation of the Police would be extended in the strict enforcement of prohibition. The Police had stated that they would cooperate in the eradication of illegal manufacture of liquor and use of it.

“In this state, the general public should also cooperate in the eradication of illegal manufacture of liquor.

“Alcohol is the main cause of poverty among the village people. Instead of spending on healthy food and education, the money earned is spent on liquor. This affects the health and the general quality of the family,” he said.

“You toil hard to earn money but spend it on liquor. Your income is dependent on the sea. Your income is a seasonal income. To remedy this situation, you must look at other ways of earning income. You have all the resources, both water and land,” he said. “Therefore, you must concentrate on alternate employment, especially home gardening,” he said.
