- BY MAHESH KEERTHIRATNE

Jacinta Chamari Wasala a former student of Wilgamuwa Naminioya Maha Vidyalaya, had obtained A passes in eight subjects and B Pass in one subject was keen in becoming an engineer and opted to stay in Kandy to follow classes in Maths. She had attained first place in the last years O/L examination in the Wilgamuwa educational zone.

On that fateful day she had been on her way to the tuition classes and had been walking along the railway platform and at an unsecured point she had been knocked down by a moving train and succumbed to the injuries.

Her parents D.M. Ekanayake and Iranganie Ekanayake residents of Wilgamuwa Bathgampola distraught by the death of their second child in this manner , related how Jacinta as

a student persevered to better her prospects in life. Though the place of their birth is reputed for gems and treasures they had lived a very humble living, by sewing garments and selling them in Hettipola town. The parents had sacrificed everything they had in order to provide a good education to the children. Jacinta had a dream of becoming an engineer in the computer field. She had obtained many certificates as awards for her feats in educational sector and in extra curricular activities.

She had represented Sri Lanka at the Child’s rights and protection conference held in Kathmandu, Nepal where seven countries in the SAARC region too participated. Jacinta did her country proud as she could speak and write English so well. Her father said that she was selected to various committees at the conference delegated with action programmes. A true Buddhist was always cheerful and had no enemies. She had ever spoken about entering the campus and becoming an engineer with the sole purpose of alleviating the difficulties the family was under going.

Her teacher in school Shiromila Karunaratne, with tears in her eyes and sobbing related that her loss had been a great blow not only to the family, the school, the village but also to the country as she would have brought glory to her motherland in whatever field she excelled.

Today her grief stricken class mates feel they had lost a friend and someone who would have lead them to great heights. The entire Wilgamuwa area is now engulfed in grief and sorrow.

White flags continue to flutter in the back drop of the Namini Oya Maha Vidyalaya , where children gather to meet and play, and the sombre atmosphere which now prevails silently weeps the death of one who aspired to win much for her alma mater.

Jacinta’s class mates, her teachers and loved ones would file past her coffin, unable to hide their tears, and some gasping, at the sight of her beautiful face, which every one in the village remembers so well.

“May She attain the supreme bliss of Nirvana “
