BITTER MEMORIES WOULD CLING TO HER IN PLACE OF HER SON

The mother of an eight-year-old child said that her son Adeepa Shanuka Mallikaara­chchi had died due to knocking against the plate that was in her hand. She said while weeping, that her son had been admitted to the ICU of the Colombo General Hospital on April 19, because he had sustained injuries due to this accident.

The child who had succumbed to his injuries was the younger son of Kavinda Mallikaara­hchi who was a resident of Kulupana, Pokunuwita in Horana. He was a grade four student of Kulupana Taxila Junior School.

His father was a machine operator working for a private institute. When this tragic incident occurred, there had been a New Year festive gettogethe­r in their house. On April 19, the child had died in the hospital shattering the hopes of his parents about their child.

The step-father of the deceased child said that the child was his brother’s son and he had to face this tragic incident because he had knocked against his mother’s plate which was in her hand, while he was running. He had been admitted to Horana hospital and later transferre­d for further treatment to the Colombo IC Unit where he had succumbed to his injuries.

The Colombo City Coroner, M. Ashraff Roomy who held the inquiry to this sudden death decided that the death had occurred due to haemorrhag­e and the injury sustained in the child’s throat and neck caused by the broken plate.
