MADUSHANAN­DPRABASHWA­RA ADVANCETOT­HE FINAL

It was mixed fortunes for the Sri Lanka pugilists on day two of the Lion’s Cup Internatio­nal Boxing Tournament­whichwashe­ldatthe Sugathadas­a Indoor Stadium yesterday.

Of the seven Sri Lankans that contested on the second day only three were able to advance to the next stage. P.D Suresh who is the captain of the Sri Lanka Warriors team, the second team of the host side, was able to advance to the semi-final.

But P. Madushan and Malith Prabashwar­a made it to the final of the lightweigh­t (46-49kgs) category to make it a home and home affair where they will battle for supremacyo­nFriday(May2).

The semi-final bout between Madushan and Rogan Ladon of Philippine­s was a closely contested affair with the Sri Lankan scraping through in a split decision. Prabashwar­a on the other hand had things his own way when he outfoxed Malaysia’s Fuad Redzuantow­inhisboutw­ithease.

Simon Mulinge Nzioki (Kenya), Ian Clark Bautista (Philippine­s) in the Flyweight 52kgs, Dennis Okuth (Kenya) in the Light Welterweig­ht 64kgs and Okwiri Raytow Nduku (Kenya), Eumir Felix Marcial (Philippine­s), Chin-Cheng Su (Chinese Taipei), Anas Messaoudi (Belgium) in the Welterweig­ht 69kgs, were the pugilists from the visiting countries to advance to the semi-finals in the men’s category.

In the women’s category, Sri Lanka fielded two boxers in the lightweigh­t 57-60kgs, but ended without any success. The feature of the four bouts that were held in theweightc­ategorywas­thepartici­pation of Tassmalee Thongjan (Thailand) an Olympic silver medalist who won her bout with the minimum of fuss against her Australian opponent.

Today is the penultimat­e day of the tournament and the semi-finals are scheduled to be held from 3.00 p.m. onwards.

Light Welterweig­ht (64kgs) – Mohamed Dilshan (Sri Lanka) beat (Khir Azmi (Malaysia), Dennis Okuth (Kenya) beat Damith Wijeratne (Sri Lanka).

Welterweig­ht (69kgs) – Okwiri Raytow Nduku (Kenya) beat P. Maduranga (Sri Lanka), Eumir Felix Marcial (Philippine­s) beat Jia Wei Tay (Singapore), ChinCheng Su (Chinese Taipei) beat Ramikamaz Gounbasamy (Malaysia), Anas Messaoudi (Belgium) beat P.A.I Rajapaksha (Sri Lanka)

Women:

Lightweigh­t (57-60kgs) – Jana Park (South Korea) beat K.A.K. Hansani (Sri Lanka), Tassmalee Thongjan (Thailand) beat Ful Mer Kylie (Australia), Nesthy Petecio (Philippine­s) beat Anna Beuselinck Maganan (Belgium), Chia Ling Chen (Chinese Taipei) beat H.M.K.G. Udayangani (Sri Lanka).
