UPFA MEMBER SHOT DEAD

Peliyagoda Urban Council’s United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) member Chamila Sandaruwan was yesterday shot dead by gunmen while in the driving seat of his caratDalug­amainKelan­iya.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said the shooting was reported at 11.30 a.m. Mr. Sandaruwan died on the spot from the severe gunshot injuries on his neck and head.

Police said 23-yearold Sandaruwan had dropped his parents and was heading home after attending the Mahara Magistrate’s Court in connection with a case against him over a personal dispute when two unidentifi­ed men who had reportedly come on a motorbike shot him at point blank range near the Tyre Junction at Dalugama.

His car crashed into a nearby fence sec- onds after he was shot. A person accompanyi­ng the Urban Councillor was injured in the shooting and was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

Mr. Sandaruwan was elected to the Peliyagoda Urban Council in 2011.

In January last year Peliyagoda Pradeshiya Sabha Member Hasitha Madawala was shot dead by gunmen outside his house in Kelaniya.
