Man fined for spitting betel-juice

A private bus driver who was arrested for allegedly spitting beteljuice out of a bus window at a public place in Colombo was ordered to pay a fine of Rs.1500 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate.

The accused was attached to the Pettah-Katunayake bus route and was caught by the Fort police, spitting out chewed betel juice onto a roadside near Lotus Road in Colombo Fort.

Producing the accused before Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage, the Fort police alleged that the bus driver had littered the roadside with chewed betel juice making it an unpleasant sight for pedestrian­s using the pavement near Lotus road. When the accused pleaded guilty to the charge, the Magistrate imposed a fine of Rs.1500 on him. The bus driver had been charged under the Highways Ordinance.
